Candid or traditional photography: which does your wedding need?

They sound like two styles. They are really two jobs, and most Mumbai weddings need both done well.

The same moment works for both: a traditional record of the ritual, and a candid frame of how it felt.

When families in Mumbai start booking wedding photographers, the first question is usually whether to go candid or traditional. Elders often want traditional. Couples often want candid. The good news is that it is rarely a choice.

What candid photographers do

A candid photographer follows emotion rather than the schedule. They watch for small, unplanned moments: a mother fixing the bride's dupatta, the groom's friends losing it during the baraat, a grandparent's face during the pheras or the vows.

Candid work needs patience and a quiet presence. The photographer is rarely directing anyone. These are usually the photographs you frame and share.

What traditional photographers do

A traditional photographer makes sure the whole wedding is recorded in order: every ritual, every stage photo, and the family groups. If your grandmother wants a photograph with each branch of the family, this is the person who gets it done.

At a large Mumbai reception, the stage line for photographs can run for hours. A traditional photographer who keeps it moving, politely, is worth a lot.

How the two work together on the day

On a well-planned wedding, the two photographers agree positions before each ceremony. During the varmala or the ring exchange, the traditional photographer holds the clear, front-facing angle; the candid photographer moves to catch reactions from the side and the guests.

  • Brief both photographers on the order of ceremonies together.
  • Give the traditional photographer a family list for group photos.
  • Tell the candid photographer which people matter most to you.

If you can only book one

Think about who the photographs are for. If the family archive matters most, and there are many rituals and relatives, start with traditional coverage. If the wedding is small and you care most about how it felt, candid may be enough.

Either way, tell your photographer what you are giving up, so they can cover some of it. Read more on how we plan wedding photography in Mumbai, or see it in real wedding stories.
